Are you feeling radiant? Are you using the colour of the year?
Liz Hayward is a well-travelled correspondent of the Coco Republic Group. This is an extract of her recent field notes article.
The much anticipated Pantone Colour of the Year has been announced and it’s quite a surprising one. It looks like we’ll be playing with purple for the next 12 months, as Radiant Orchid has come up on top for 2014.
Purple promotes passion in people, inspiring most to either proclaim they love it or detest it. It may be due to its strength in hue, vibrancy and dominance over its sister colours that purple always stands out.
The executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman introduced this year’s new colour as ”An invitation to innovation, it encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society. An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health,” she said.
Radiant Orchid is not my favourite, I have to admit, but I can agree that it does lift the spirits and can evoke feelings of positivity and power.
Purple can be a haphazard colour to introduce to interiors. It is a big commitment and really will limit the direction an interior scheme can take. It is outrageously daring, done in a full scheme, but can add an overwhelming feminine strength to any room. Or mixing it alongside blues and reds will morph the dullest of rooms into a bright, fun space.
